Launched the LEAP (Life Skills, Employability, Aspirations & Purpose)

In the traditional method of teaching, often the knowledge of the books mostly attains paramount importance, when in reality, students also need to know about various life skills and enhance their personality, if they are to succeed in life. This aspect has been given special attention in Meghalaya and the LEAP programme has been launched which is finally going to give the students a much needed direction and which aims to make their struggle in life easier.

LEAP stands for Life Skills, Employability, Aspirations and Purpose and it has been formally launched in three districts in South West Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills and East Khasi Hills. The three colleges that played host to the inauguration were Sngap Syiem College in Mawkyrwat, the Government College in Tura and the Lady Keane College in Shillong. Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had always lauded such efforts and under his Career Guidance and Counseling Scheme, LEAP is indeed a one of a kind initiative, the first that aims to provide wholesome education to the pupils and add value to the existing structure of education. The Department of Sports and Youth Affairs will also play a major role as it will help LEAP organize workshops and interventions at both school and college levels so that unemployed youths and especially dropouts, can now find a way of making a living.

Dr. Mukul Sangma has always expressed concern over the rate of unemployment in the state and had stressed to improve the infrastructure of the region so that a developing state like Meghalaya could make use of the potential that the youth of the state provided and also equip them better to meet the challenges of life. Career Camps for job aspirants and Livelihood Camps for unemployed youth are the highlights of this programme. The Offices of the Deputy Commissioners will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of LEAP in all the levels and to especially ensure that the maximum number of girls too enrolled for the scheme, side by side with the boys and the total expected number of enrollment is deemed to cross 1000 in the first phase.
