Meghalaya Community Participation & Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017

The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017 shall come into force as deemed by the Government. The Act means to review the delivery of public services and the implementation of the various government schemes and programs that were initiated for public interest. The timely review ensures that the schemes are active and reaching the people and the desired goals has either been achieved or are in the process of being realized. Moreover, not only would the audit see whether the schemes are being implemented, but also measure the level of effectiveness and whether the people are indeed content with it.

The regular monitoring would also ensure complete transparency in the delivery of the schemes and to reduce corruption while delegating services. The audit would also reveal the correctional measures required to correct the flaws, if any, in the initial stages of implementation and ensure that all the projects that are still underway would be finished on time. The Social Audit Process would also be used to educate the citizens about the schemes that the government has put in place for them, and make them aware enough so that they can avail the full benefit of the schemes. This would also help in building their confidence and would enhance the citizen’s ownership in the development initiatives taken up by the Government as befitting a Participatory Democracy.

The Act would also be used to seek suggestions from the people themselves and ask them about their feedback regarding the projects already in place. It would also give them a platform to express their grievances and ask for redress if need be. The CM of Meghalaya has always maintained that his government was working relentlessly for the betterment of the people and the Act would only further his cause. This Act would bring the government and the people together, providing them with the same footing and give them the opportunity to work together, which is absolutely essential for the betterment of the state and fill in the gaps as and when required.
